Group Plans (for employers)
Group vs Individual Insurance - what's the difference?
Group vs. Individual Health Insurance An Individual plan is obtained by an individual and can include his or her family; a Group plan is obtained by an employer. Individual Health Insurance is medically underwritten -- meaning that an underwriter will evaluate the medical health condition of an applicant (including any ongoing prescription medication) to determine the insurability of the applicant. Individual policies may be rated (covered, but for an additional premium), waived -- (a specific condition not covered), or for certain medical conditions the entire policy could be declined. Premiums for Individual plans are generally lower than for Group plans. Premiums may not be paid for or reimbursed by an employer. Group Health Insurance (obtained by an employer) is guaranteed coverage regardless of the medical health condition of an applicant. (There may be a waiting period for pre-existing health conditions if an applicant has not had credible health coverage in the previous 90 days.) Because group health insurance is guaranteed coverage, premiums are usually higher compared to an Individual Plan -- although the difference may be offset depending on how much the employer contributes toward the premium. If you are Self-employed, you can apply for individual health insurance or, if you meet the definition of a Business Group of One, you can also apply for group insurance. Colorado law states that Business Groups of One cannot be rejected under a "Basic" or "Standard" health plan during open enrollment periods as specified by law. This is important if you currently have a health condition and are having trouble obtaining Individual Health Insurance.
